Our RSA200 celebrations continue this summer with a variety of exhibitions, talks and creative workshops. From printmaking exhibitions in Edinburgh to events across Scotland, discover what’s happening this July.

 


 

What’s on at the RSA

Chaos and Control: Printmaking in Scotland Now

27 June – 26 July

This major exhibition explores the contribution of printmaking to the landscape of contemporary art in Scotland. Co-curated by Ade Adesina RSA and Head of Programme Flora La Thangue, Chaos and Control will bring together leading Royal Scottish Academicians alongside established and emerging artists from across the country. Through works that embrace both meticulous craft and creative unpredictability, the show will ask how artists continue to reinvent the medium in the present day.

 

Frances Walker: Recent Prints and Rarities

27 June - 26 July

The Academicians’ Gallery is pleased to present Recent Prints and Rarities, a collection of works by one of Scotland’s most highly regarded contemporary artists, Frances Walker RSA CBE.

This exhibition brings their practices together for the first time in Argyll, transforming Tighnabruaich Gallery into a space of energy, humour and reflection.

Lessons From a Remarkably Well-illustrated Anatomy Textbook

This exhibition reflects on Anatomy of the Human Body by Lockhart, Hamilton & Fyfe, a 1959 textbook, and how artists enhance the learning environment.

 

Biggar & Upper Clydesdale Museum 

Treasures from the Attic

Until 26 July   

Treasures from the Attic showcases a collection of the artworks Biggar and Upper Clydesdale Museum hold in their attic, works that the public rarely get to see. On view you'll find pieces by Robert Gemmell Hutchison RSA, William Crozier ARSA, John Pairman and James Howe, all of whom have a connection to Biggar.

Summer Art Challenge: Historic Dunfermline Through the Eyes of Children: 

4 July – 16 August

This free summer art challenge invites young artists to explore and celebrate Dunfermline’s rich history through creativity. All entries will be displayed in a public exhibition at Dunfermline Carnegie Library and Galleries.

Ushida Findlay: Future-rustic

V&A Dundee present a display celebrating architect Kathryn Findlay, the first woman architect elected to the Royal Scottish Academy. This display brings together rare materials from the Ushida Findlay archive, showcasing the pioneering collaboration she formed with Eisaku Ushida and tracing the evolution of her architectural career.

Relief Printing with Ade Adesina RSA

4 - 5 July

Join master printmaker Ade Adesina RSA to create a series of striking images with this simple yet powerful medium. This masterclass is part of a new collaboration between the RSA and Edinburgh Printmakers, offering a unique opportunity to learn from acclaimed Scottish artists.

Mokuhanga and Japanese Papermaking with Elspeth Lamb RSA and Alison Newman

17 - 19 July

Discover Japanese papermaking and Mokuhanga woodblock printing in this unique three-day workshop developed by Elspeth Lamb RSA and Alison Newman. This masterclass is part of a new collaboration between the RSA and Edinburgh Printmakers, offering a unique opportunity to learn from acclaimed Scottish artists.

Make your own Elgin Marbles & Family Fun: Monoprinting

17, 25 and 31 July 

Join Elgin Museum for a family friendly event where you’ll create your own Elgin Marbles inspired by the work of John Henning HRSA. You’ll use the Henning replicas from Elgin Museum’s collection as inspiration and create your own models in relief, using clay and casting with plaster.

The Hunterian will mark 200 years of the Royal Scottish Academy by celebrating the breadth and impact of its Academicians’ work. Across its main displays in the Hunterian Art Gallery, The Hunterian will present selected pieces that engage with key themes including: art making, reforming the canon, art across borders, juxtapositions, and light and colour.

Joyce W. Carins PPRSA | Maps: Memories from the Second World War

Discover how RSA Academicians have depicted war, conflict and remembrance through artwork on display at the National War Museum, Edinburgh Castle. As well as the exhibition Maps: Memories from the Second World War by Joyce W. Carins PPRSA, paintings by Academicians Robert Gibb, Sir John Watson Gordon and Alberto Morrocco can be seen throughout the permanent galleries.

Jean F. Watson: An Artistic Legacy

Jean Fletcher Watson (1877-1974) presented a series of financial donations to the City of Edinburgh to develop a collection of Scottish art. Since then, the Jean F. Watson Bequest Fund has enabled the acquisition of more than 1,000 artworks. This exhibition at the City Art Centre will celebrate Watson’s vision and generosity, showcasing works by William Fettes Douglas PPRSA, Arthur Melville ARSA, Charles Hodge Mackie RSA, Anne Redpath RSA and more.

Past, Present, Future: The Royal Scottish Academy in the Scottish Borders

To celebrate the RSA’s 200th year, this show brings together early and contemporary works by artists with a strong connection to the Scottish Borders. Wendy McMurdo: The Digital Mirror

This solo exhibition of work by Edinburgh-based artist Wendy McMurdo RSA will be the largest presentation of her work in Scotland to date. It will feature more than 50 photographs, as well as digital animations and key loans of works that have inspired her practice. The exhibition will concentrate on her work produced from 1995 to 2018, exploring childhood and play in the digital age.

A Celebration of Elizabeth Blackadder

This exhibition will showcase the work of Dame Elizabeth Blackadder RSA. The breadth of her work in oil, watercolour and printmaking techniques has long been celebrated, and this show highlights her collaborations with Dovecot across five decades to create over 30 tapestries and hand-tufted rugs.

Polar Portraits by Calum Colvin RSA

Discovery Point is home to RRS Discovery; built and launched in Dundee in 1901 for Captain Scott and Ernest Shackleton’s first Antarctic voyage. On view throughout 2026 are two portraits by renowned Scottish artist Calum Colvin RSA, depicting two of polar exploration’s most recognisable figures, Captain Scott and Roald Amundsen.
