Earth Matters
Seeing soil through art

Earth Matters marks 300 years since the birth of James Hutton, the Edinburgh-born geologist, farmer and thinker who revolutionised our understanding of Earth’s creation and the ground beneath us.

Inspired by Hutton and subsequent trailblazers, over 30 artists delve into this living ecosystem to reveal its brilliance, beauty and fragility.

Earth Matters is an exhibition presented in partnership with Design Exhibition Scotland and part of the James Hutton Tercentenary.

Earth Matters features work by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham HRSA, Louise Bennetts, Stevi Benson, Stefanie Ying Lin Cheong, John Clerk of Eldin, Constanza Dessain, Joan Eardley RSA, Nancy Fuller, Cara Guthrie, Ilana Halperin RSA, James Hutton, Adam Johnston, John Kay, Tania Kovats, Viv Lee & Jonathan Wade, Becky Little & Tom Morton, Sekai Machache, Maria McStay, Kevin Andrew Morris, Kelly Murray, George Perry, Carol Rhodes, Natalie Taylor, Graeme Todd RSA, JL Williams, Clare Woods, Eleanor White, Alberta Whittle, Crunch Willoughby, Fiona Young, and more.

About Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh & Inverleith House

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a global centre for biodiversity science, horticulture and education. We explore, conserve and explain the world of plants and fungi, and nurture one of the world’s richest botanical collections at our four Gardens: Edinburgh, Benmore, Dawyck and Logan.

Inverleith House, nestled in the centre of the Edinburgh Garden, has an illustrious history as a gallery. It was the first Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art from 1960 to 1984, and became thr Botanics' own exhibition space in 1986. We deliver a diverse, thought-provoking, joyful programme of exhibitions and events to inspire our audiences. Through art, we connect people and plants.
