Maps: Memories from the Second World War

9 March 2024 – 4 October 2026

The exhibition Maps: Memories from the Second World War features Father's Memorabilia, North West Europe, part one of a diptych by Joyce W. Carins PPRSA, created as part of her influential War Tourist project. The companion painting Father's Memorabilia, Tunisia is also on display.

The exhibition drew inspiration from the Joyce W. Cairns painting and the artwork is on display with the objects Joyce has used in the painting to tell the story of her father, Major Robert W. Cairns.

Further examples of Academicians' work can be found throughout our permanent galleries from the monumental The Thin Red Line by Robert Gibb RSA (donated by Diageo) to a portrait of Captain James W. 'Kazim' Smith painted by Alberto Morrocco RSA, his friend and a fellow student at Coray's School of Art at Aberdeen.

Entrance into the museum and exhibition is free, but tickets to the castle need to be purchased. Visit the Edinburgh Castle website for ticket prices and information.
