Polar Portraits by Calum Colvin RSA
Portrait of both Captain Scott and Roald Amundsen by Scottish artist Calum Colvin OBE RSA FRSE.

Operated by Dundee Heritage Trust, Discovery Point is home to RRS Discovery; built and launched in Dundee in 1901 for Captain Scott and Ernest Shackleton’s first Antarctic voyage. Among the Trust’s extensive polar items designated as a Recognised Collection – including Captain Scott's Snow goggles and personal items from the crews – are two portraits by renowned Scottish artist, Calum Colvin OBE RSA FRSE.

Depicting two of polar exploration’s most recognisable figures, Captain Scott and Roald Amundsen, the portraits were created by photographing the interior of an Antarctic base camp depot containing all the equipment needed for a polar sledging journey, and painting a portrait of each explorer onto the image.

On display at Discovery Point throughout 2025 and 2026.

    About Discovery Point

    Discovery Point at the heart of Dundee's waterfront is home to the Royal Research Ship
    Discovery; built in Dundee in 1900 and launched in 1901, for Captain Scott's famous first
    Antarctic Expedition. During this pioneering Expedition, many discoveries were made that
    shaped the future of our understanding of Antarctica and climate science. After her
    1901-1904 Expedition, Discovery went on to be used by the Hudson Bay Company, and
    was taken back into Southern oceans by the Oceanographic Expeditions of 1925-1927;
    following her refit for oceanographic research use and official designation as the UK's
    very first Royal Research Ship.
