George Bain: The Continuous Line

An exhibition tracing George Bain's journey from a childhood in Caithness to becoming 'Master of Celtic Art'.

George Bain (1881-1968) was a Scottish artist, illustrator, designer, and teacher known for his vision and advocacy of a vibrant, creative Celtic craft. His 1945 manuals on Celtic art, titled Celtic Art: The Methods of Construction, remain in print and continue to inspire artists and craftspeople worldwide.

Bain's story shows a determination and commitment to art. This exhibition traces his journey, from a childhood in Caithness to training at the Royal Scottish Academy and his subsequent career as an artist. It culminates in an exploration of his dedicated examination of intricate Celtic designs, which earned him the title of 'Master of Celtic Art'.

The George Bain Collection is a Recognised Collection of National Significance to Scotland and is held by Groam House Museum

Groam House Museum may be small, but it is rich in Scotland's artistic heritage. This independent museum is located in Rosemarkie on the Black Isle. The highlight of our collection is an exquisite 8th-century Pictish sculpted stone discovered in the village. This remarkable cross-slab stands 2.6 meters tall and features intricate carvings of enigmatic Pictish symbols alongside Christian crosses. The museum also holds the exceptional collection of George Bain (1881-1968), a Scottish artist, illustrator, designer, and teacher, celebrated as the "Master of Celtic Art," a collection recognised as being of National Significance.
