Artist Talk with Toby Paterson RSA

    Friday 27 March, 1-2pm

Join the Art Collection and the Centre for the Sciences of Memory and Place for an artist talk with Toby Paterson RSA.

RSA Academician Toby Paterson is a renowned and award winning Scottish visual artist, whose work deeply considers the experiences of place and architecture. Paterson’s painting always begins from a subjective experience of place, building on formal aspects such as colour and materiality onwards through spatial qualities and into the objective socio-political and historical considerations that haunt all cities. His aim is to communicate the everyday fascination that lies around every corner, offering the chance for singular perspectives within the complex, collective realities we inhabit. The forms and ideas inherent in architecture inspire Paterson’s work, as does the experience of place.

Toby is well represented in the University's Collection and in 2022 was commissioned to create two site specific works The Open Grid: Landscapes and The Open Grid: Sunsets for the Pathfoot Building. Toby will lead an informal talk about his practice, before we take a walk around the Pathfoot Building to view his works. This talk is hosted by the Art Collection and the Centre for the Sciences of Place and Memory. It is open to staff, students and the public and will take place online and in person.

    Art & Science Exhibition Series
    8 September 2025 - 7 August 2026

Art & Science explores the shared communities of practice between artists and scientific researchers: the human quest for visual understanding.

The Art Collection aims to make art and culture a part of everyday life for staff, students and visitors throughout the campus. We support academics to enable exchanges between art, research and teaching, and inspire everyone to engage with art.

Each academic year, all of the Art Collection’s exhibitions, events and workshops are directly inspired by one of the University research themes. In 2025-26 our chosen focus Art & Science explores the shared communities of practice between artists and scientific researchers: the human quest for visual understanding.

The exhibition includes Species (Coelacanth) II, a print by Stuart MacKenzie RSA on loan from the RSA Collections and Le Bouc, a painting by the award-winning artist Alison Watt RSA, displayed in Scotland for the first time, at the University of Stirling.

    Topography Exhibition Series

From September 2026 to August 2027, the Topography exhibition series will include Fault, by Annie Cattrell RSA, on loan from the RSA.
