Works by Royal Scottish Academicians at The Hunterian
A selection of works across two centuries as part of our summer works on paper rotation.

The Hunterian will mark 200 years of the Royal Scottish Academy by celebrating the breadth and impact of its Academicians’ work. Across its main displays in the Hunterian Art Gallery, The Hunterian will present selected pieces that engage with key themes including: art making, reforming the canon, art across borders, juxtapositions, and light and colour.

Together, the selected works trace two centuries of artistic achievement and reveal how Scotland’s artists have responded to the societies in which they lived. From reflections on historical and literary subjects to depictions of contemporary life, fashion and events, they offer insight into shifting ideas about art, identity, and nationhood.

Through this celebration, The Hunterian invites visitors to consider the continuing dialogue between past and present, and the enduring role of the Royal Scottish Academy in shaping Scotland’s visual culture.

    About The Hunterian

The Hunterian Art Gallery frames questions about how art and art galleries can be more meaningful to more people. See works by Whistler and Mackintosh, Rembrandt and Rubens, the Glasgow Boys and Scottish Colourists, as well as leading contemporary artists. The displays in the main gallery feature a significant number of artworks made by women and other artists who have been less well represented. The Hunterian Art Gallery is also home to one of Scotland's largest print collections, a sculpture courtyard, the Mackintosh House and an exciting programme of contemporary art exhibitions.
