    A new exhibition of works by Joan Eardley RSA exploring her relationship with the sea at Catterline
     
    Joan Eardley RSA (1921-1963) was one of the most original and admired British artists of her generation, noted for her portraiture of street children in Glasgow and her landscapes of Catterline, a fishing village on the north east coast of Scotland.

    Eardley first visited Catterline in 1951 and was immediately taken by its wild environment. While her early paintings focused on the village itself, in 1957, after a number of years living between Glasgow and Catterline, she purchased a cottage in the village overlooking the sea.

    The sea fascinated Eardley and while initially she found it a challenge to paint, the later influence of abstract expressionism on her work made it became an ideal subject for her. It allowed Eardley to express her inner most feelings, her relationships and ultimately her emotional condition.

    The Sea at Catterline includes works by Eardley on loan from the Royal Scottish Academy, The Fleming Collection and Aberdeen Art Gallery from the period between 1958 and 1962 when she was arguably at the peak of her creative powers and before her untimely death in 1963.

    Collecting Joan Eardley RSA: From the Highlands to Hampshire. 

    Maltings Cinema at Berwick Barracks 

    24 June 2026, 6pm - 7pm 

     

    Alice Strang, Associate Director of Lyon & Turnbull fine art auctioneers, will discuss the life-time and posthumous collecting of Joan Eardley’s work in the public realm. This provides insight into the development of her career and reputation, as well as shedding light on the methods and patterns of collecting contemporary and British art by the country’s public museums, galleries and beyond.


    Alice will take us on a journey from the Highlands to Hampshire via Eardley’s tremendous paintings, involving the Ministry of Works, the BBC and an Oxford college for starters.

    Collaging Catterline: A Creative History Workshop

    Maltings at Hide Hill 

    18 July 2026, 2pm - 4pm

     

    Join art historian Keava McMillan for informal creative workshop using collage to explore Joan Earsley's life and work at Catterline. 

     

    We will learn about the spaces, people, and scenes from this Aberdeenshire village that inspired and sustained the artist in the final years of her life. Using copies of letters, photographs, maps, and paintings, participants are encouraged to create their own vision of Joan Eardley’s home, landscape, lovers, and community.

     

    Keava McMillan is an art historian specialising in queer Scottish art history. She is a Lecturer in Gender History at the University of Glasgow and works at Lavender Menace, a queer community archive based in Edinburgh.

     

    Maltings at Hide Hill is a new Cultural Resource Hub made possible by funding from Create Berwick, the Culture and Creative Zone (CCZ) funded by the North East Combined Authority and Northumberland County Council to support the growth of the cultural and creative industries in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

    Culture Above and Beyond: RSA200 Moving Image Programme

    RSA200: Celebrating Together is an international programme markingv the 200th aniversary of the Royal Scottish Academay of Art and Architecture

     

    The RSA200 Moving Image Programme has been curated by painter and filmmaker Ronald Forbes RSA to showcase moving image work by Royal Scottish Academicians and RSA award winners.

     

    To accompany the exhibition The Sea at Catterline by Joan Eardley RSA at the Granary Gallery, The Maltings is delighted to present Culture Above and Beyond from the programme, centering on rural and wilder places.

     

    These films have a setting that is rural or coastal, rather than urban. This setting is explored visually, revealing the fundamental beauty of nature. These works, in different ways also focus on the profound social and cultural effects of the environment, natural and physical.

    In Love Letters from Aberdeenshire, Daniel Cook relates a narrative of lost love. This is supported by the romantic lusciousness of Elvis’ songs, contrasting with the testing living conditions of a northern fishing community.

     

    In North Platte, Tim Sandys creates a percussive, rhythmic musical work with crisp sunlit visuals, in the unlikely setting of an industrial railway junction located at snowbound North Platte, Nebraska, USA.

    In Source, Dalziel + Scullion RSA reveal the elemental beauty of rugged coastal nature through the eyes of a young boy. We share his wonder at the orderly communities of creatures and plants from shore to field.

     

    In Dighty Burn, Edward Summerton RSA and Michael Windle present the story of a historic tragedy, which occurred at the Dighty Burn in Angus, Scotland. A folksong on the soundtrack carries the narrative as the camera presents beautiful images of the water and the surrounding landscape.

     

    In Baile an Or, Graham Fagen RSA explores the sea, river and land that form Helmsdale and the Strath of Kildonan; the gold that comes from its geology, the living that is made from its land and the legacy of its past.

     

    In A’ Bheinn / The Mountain, Kate Whiteford RSA takes us on a journey through the landscape, culture, time and poetry of the western isles of Skye, Raasay, North and South Uist, Benbecula, Lewis and Harris, following the life and journeys of the poets Mary MacClean and Donald John MacDonald.

    Join Theodore Albano, Director of The Fleming Collection, as he discusses the later career of legendary Scottish artist Joan Eardley.

     

    Eardley, whose short life spanned a range of subjects and techniques ultimately settled in the North East coastal town of Catterline. It was here that she became known as one of the most expressive and unique landscape painters of her generation.

     

    Theodore Albano is co-curator of the exhibition Joan Eardley: The Sea at Catterline at the Granary Gallery. He has previously worked in museums, galleries and foundations in Canada and the USA.
