David Michie RSA greatly supported opportunities for artists' travel throughout his life. His own post diploma 'traveller' was spent in Italy with John Houston - meeting latterly with Elizabeth Blackadder and Frances Walker. Throughout his career he continued to travel and encouraged students to also do so, absorbing and recording their experiences as reference for new work.

To coincide with The David Michie Gift exhibition, The Artist Traveller showcases works by some of the many artists whom the Academy has supported to travel in recent years. The RSA has a long history of disbursing funds for travel-based awards and residencies both throughout Scotland and abroad. This exhibition features works from a variety of RSA travel initiatives such as, the RSA John Kinross Scholarship to Florence, the RSA Residencies for Scotland, the RSA William Littlejohn Award and the Sabhal Mor Ostaig Artist in Residence.

Exhibiting Artists: Kate Fahey | Stephanie Mann | Rebecca Milling | Kyle Noble | Murray Robertson

In celebration of David Michie's life and work, and in partnership with his family, we aim to launch a new travel fund The RSA David Michie Travel Award, during November 2016. Further details tbc.
