Alexander Ignatius Roche was born in Glasgow in 1861. He studied at the Glasgow Art College and upon finishing his studies went on to work at an architect’s office where he remained for some time. He left his position to travel to Paris where he studied at Julien’s and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
Roche painted in all genres and exhibited every year of his career bar one at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1887 on. Later in life Roche suffered a stroke which for the remainder of his life deprived him of the use of his right hand and arm. Despite this, he trained himself to use his left hand and continued to paint.
