Joe Fan RSA was born in Hong Kong in 1962 and moved to Scotland in the late 1970s to study Graphic Design at Aberdeen College of Commerce. Advised by one of his lecturers, he went onto apply for a place at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen to study Fine Art. It was here that Fan met and was taught by Gordon Bryce. Following graduation in 1988, Fan won the Miller Homes Young Scottish Artist of the Year and was sent to Paris to spend time at the Cité Internationale des Arts (1989-90). He returned to Aberdeen and lectured at Gray’s in Drawing and Painting (1990-97). During this period, Fan also spent time as a visiting lecturer at Cyprus College of Art, Paphos in 1994. In 1997 Fan gave up his role as a lecturer to pursue his own full-time career as an artist. Fan continues to live and work in Aberdeen.

 

Fan has won many awards and prizes including: the RSA Gillies Award;, Prize Winner for the Aberdeen Artists’ Exhibition;  the RSA’s John Maxwell Travelling Award. His work is in many public and private collections including the Scottish Arts Council; Aberdeen Art Gallery; Xerox Marlow Collection; Miller Homes Art Collection; Aberdeen Royal Infirmary; Unilever Art Collection; and Jones Day Solicitors.
