Plum Cloutman is a London-based artist and graduate of Edinburgh College of Art known for her intimately scaled works that blend personal memory, fantasy, and domestic interiority. Her paintings, often no larger than a postcard, invite viewers into miniature worlds where reality quietly unravels and the familiar becomes strange. Rendered with delicate layers of oil paint, watercolour pencil, and pastel, her surfaces evoke the textures of wood grain, clay, and weathered walls - holding a sense of time, place and quiet transformation.
Being selected for the 2019 RSA New Contemporaries came at a crucial moment and represented a much-needed vote of confidence. I had just completed my graduate show, and the idea of establishing a genuine practice felt like a daunting prospect without the structure and guidance provided by ECA. But, having the opportunity to work towards something as exciting as New Contemporaries completely dispelled that anxiety, providing the impetus to develop my work as an artist, rather than as a student. It catalysed a really formative, fun period of work and experimentation that established the foundation for my practice as a working artist today.
