Amy Harrison (b.1999) is an Edinburgh-based interdisciplinary artist who focuses on mapping physical, virtual, and theoretical space. After initially changing her degree from Architecture, Amy graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design with First Class Honours in Fine Art in 2021 and a Master of Fine Art in Art and Humanities in 2022.

The exhibited body of work, Thresholds of Space, combines an intervention from her concluding master’s project with a series of wall pieces.

Drawing on notions of liminality, the work holds the viewer in a place of transition; in this instance, the RSA Member’s Lobby, a space out of which one or more other galleries and corridors lead. Thresholds of Space additionally bears a finite and ephemeral nature as it is conditioned by the surrounding environment and, therefore, can only be wholly experienced when installed.

By using reflective materials within her work, Harrison casts the audience as its subject, highlighting their agency and the unique impact achieved by their presence.

The body of work serves as a liaison, a liminal space mediating dialogue between the viewer, the artwork and the environment.

Definition: Thresholds characteristically express dualities; two different states, spaces, or realities at opposing sides of a boundary. On the boundary lays the state of liminality. Liminal space can be described as physical, psychological, or metaphorical locations between an origin and a destination.
