David Octavius Hill & Robert Adamson

A selection of original prints produced from the original 1840s paper negatives by the pioneering Hill & Adamson partnership. They represent the two most  important printing processes that followed the original calotypes: carbon prints and photogravures and are original late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century prints, not modern reproductions.

Each print was created by members of the Annan family using the original photographic materials and printing techniques of its period. They are therefore historic works in their own right, while also serving as faithful interpretations of Hill & Adamson's pioneering photographs.

Together, these prints demonstrate how successive generations of master printers preserved, interpreted and celebrated one of photography's greatest early achievments.
