    The Ground Shakes

    14 March - 26 June  2026

The Ground Shakes is an exhibition of new works created over the past 2 years by Dundee-based artist Calum Wallis and funded by Creative Scotland and The Geological Association. These works take a geological journey across Scotland, using the Highland Boundary and Great Glen fault lines as way markers for an exploration of a land that is in a constant cycle of change.

Large scale drawings, etchings, stone lithographs and films made during extensive, location based research from Conic Hill to Loch Eriboll, Imachar to Wilkhaven examine how, in a human lifetime, we might relate to the deep-time processes which shape the ground under our feet.

Calum Wallis is one of many artists connected to the RSA through the Residencies for Scotland programme.

    18 May - 28 August

The RSA200 film screenings in An Tobar reflect An Tobar and Mull Theatre’s longstanding commitment to ambitious contemporary visual art and artists’ film. We originally commissioned Dalziel + Scullion’s Source to mark An Tobar’s tenth anniversary, establishing an important relationship with one of Scotland’s most respected artist duos. Over the years, An Tobar and Mull Theatre has also presented Graham Fagen’s powerful The Slave’s Lament and The Weepers by Rachel Maclean, whose films continue to shape contemporary conversations around identity, politics and performance. Bringing the RSA200 Moving Image Programme to Mull builds on this history, reinforcing the idea that internationally significant contemporary art can — and should — be experienced far beyond major urban centres.

George Donald RSA: Tutored Life Drawing Workshop

    13 August 2026

An Tobar will host a  practical life drawing workshop  by George Donald RSA. George will teach basic life drawing skills and techniques with the use of a model human skeleton, while giving lively insights into the history of life drawing and telling stories of his illustrious career.

Over the course of the day participants will draw from a life model and explore how the anatomy of the body influences its surface, shape and tone. George will guide and instruct participants to create their own work in a relaxed and informal setting.

This is an exciting opportunity to link to the Royal Scottish Academy through the work of one of its highly esteemed Academicians.

    Booking details to be confirmed.

About An Tobar and Mull Theatre

We’re of our place and for our community. We aspire to be an island voice in a national and international conversation.

We create and support art that is brave, complex, generous and full of heart, born of difficult questions instead of easy answers. We have no interest in orthodoxy.

We want our audiences to leave feeling nourished, connected and understood. We want a conversation with them that is reciprocal.

We are a place for joining in, with welcome and warmth at its heart.
