    Aberdeen Art Gallery - Celebrating Together on the Bloomberg Connects app
     

    This year, the Royal Scottish Academy, which is commonly known as RSA, reaches a remarkable milestone — two hundred years of supporting Scottish art and architecture. It’s a moment to look back and reflect on the artists who have shaped Scotland’s visual culture, and whose work continues to resonate today.

     

    Aberdeen Art Gallery is home to one of the finest collections in the country.

    For  RSA200 Celebrating Together we’re highlighting works on display by Academicians in a special tour on the Bloomberg Connects digital guide to the Art Gallery. Artists include Joan Eardley RSA, Alison Watt RSA, Frances Walker RSA, James Cowie RSA, Samuel John Peploe RSA, Sir James Guthrie RSA, Callum Innes RSA, Sir John Lavery RSA Glen Onwin RSA and Joyce Cairns RSA as well as others.

     

    Using the Bloomberg Connects digital guide, we’ve created a tour through the gallery that brings these works together and places them within the wider story of the Academy.

    140 years of artist-led education at Gray’s School of Art is being celebrated in a major exhibition at Aberdeen Art Gallery. Discover works by over 50 artists, are all of whom have studied or worked at Gray’s, and including three Past Presidents of the RSA and 20 Academicians.

    The exhibition focuses on the art school environment: on what artists teach, how ideas are passed from generation to generation, and how studio culture continues to evolve. Painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, film, video, photography, ceramics and textiles are all on display. There are works by important artist-educators such as James Cowie RSA, Robert Henderson Blyth RSA, Sylvia Wishart RSA, Frances Walker RSA, Joyce Cairns RSA, Fred Stiven ARSA and Ainslie Yule, alongside contributions that correspond with these works by current staff and alumni including David Blyth, Andrew Cranston RSA (Elect), Callum Innes RSA and Tako Taal. Artworks and archival material are drawn from the collections of Aberdeen Archives Gallery & Museums, RGU Art & Heritage Collections, the Royal Scottish Academy and from private lenders.

    Into the Light

    Twin sculptures by Keith Rand RSA from Aberdeen Art Gallery’s collection are the inspiration for Into the Light, an exhibition of new works by Members of Aberdeen Artists Society.

     

    The 14 exhibiting artists have created new works in response to Into the Light Blue and Into the Light Crimson by Keith Rand RSA (1956-2013). Rand’s striking sculptures have prompted a rich and varied selection of responses which explore his time living and working in the North East, his sculptural philosophy and his techniques in wood, colour and form. Rand taught sculpture at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and also worked as a technician at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) in Lumsden, Aberdeenshire.

    The exhibiting artists are:
    Corri Black, Ann Bowes, Shelagh Brown, Volha Druhakova, Melanie Guatelli, Amanda Hirst, Rita Kermack, Nicole Luchita, Alisa Magnus, Sue Savege, John Snelling, Bruce Swanson, Courtney Szabo, Fenneke Wolters-Sinke.
