Her Majesty The Queen visits the Royal Scottish Academy

We were delighted to welcome Her Majesty The Queen to the Royal Scottish Academy today as part of our bicentenary celebrations, marking 200 years of supporting artists, architects and creative practice across Scotland.

Guided through the galleries by our President Gareth Fisher and Director Colin Greenslade, Her Majesty toured our new exhibition, Chaos and Control: Printmaking in Scotland Now. Co-curated by Ade Adesina RSA and Head of Programme Flora La Thangue, the exhibition brings together works by 47 established, emerging and internationally recognised artists working in printmaking today. It explores traditional techniques and experimental approaches that push the boundaries of the medium.

During the visit, Her Majesty met artists featured in the exhibition, including Royal Scottish Academicians and emerging practitioners. She discussed a range of printmaking techniques with the exhibiting artists, hearing about the important role printmaking studios play in fostering creative communities across Scotland. The Queen was interested to learn more about the Academy's work, including its role in supporting artists and architects across Scotland.

As part of the visit, Her Majesty marked the Academy's bicentenary by cutting a celebratory cake, recognising 200 years of the Academy’s contribution to Scottish cultural life and our ongoing commitment to supporting artists and architects. The visit was a wonderful celebration of this landmark anniversary, and a moment to reflect on our continuing role in shaping the future of Scottish art.
