THE INTRO BIT!…

This exhibition is the first Annual Exhibition for the Royal Scottish Academy in the new premises and significantly it is the first exhibition to occupy the entire suite of 12 galleries. John Houston is the Convenor on our return and has taken the opportunity presented, to introduce some changes to the format and try out some new ways to use the superbly refurbished spaces upstairs, augmented by the addition of the wonderful octagon rooms in the lower floor.

We are delighted by the generous support this year from our honorary members and that our annual exhibition will include paintings by Craigie Aitchison and John Bellany, photography by Eve Arnold, prints by Alan Davie, Richard Demarco, Antoni Tapies and sculpture by Eduardo Paolozzi. The scope and character of the exhibition has been enhanced also by the positive response by a number of distinguished artists such as Steven Campbell, Peter Howson, Sandy Moffat and John Byrne.

Over the past few years, the RSA enjoyed the good support of city galleries in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, allowing us to continue to present our annual exhibitions in an unbroken sequence which was very gratifying and a very rewarding experience in every way. Our sponsors Maclay Murray and Spens backed our efforts in all our travels and made these adventures possible and so this year we are genuinely pleased that we are able to round off that period and continue that partnership with what we hope will be a grand return to our home.

Included in the exhibition are memorial groups in honour of past members who made very strong contributions to our national life, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham CBE HRSA in Painting and John Richards CBE RSA in Architecture.
