A series of etchings created during an intense period of work for Wiszniewski focuses on the literary heritage and legend of Robert Burns, presenting a romanticised vision of the Bard. The detail achievable in etching is particularly well-suited to Wiszniewski’s tightly packed shapes and lines. Highland Mary depicts Burns and his muse, Mary Campbell, with sprawling foliage curling around the couple, framing their embrace. Ploughman Poet takes a literal view of one of Burns’ best-known pseudonyms to point to the poet’s modest beginnings. By presenting the poet as engaged in the manual task of ploughing the land, Wiszniewski alludes to the toil of the writer, and implicitly, that of the artist.
