Phaethon was one of the two immortal steeds of the dawn-goddess Eos, the other being Lampos.
This work is homage to the tradition of equine sculpture, and in particular the extraordinary renaissance bronze by Giambologna, in the University of Edinburgh’s Torrie Collection. It is rendered écorché, meaning sculpted showing the musculature and skeletal form without skin. Here Phaethon is in the process of being cast in bronze.
