Elected ARSA: 11 November 1846

Alexander Handyside Ritchie was born in Musselburgh in 1804. He studied at Edinburgh School of Arts in 1823, and then at the Trustees School of Design, before studying in Rome between 1826 and 1830. At the close of his studies, he returned to Musselburgh where he held a studio until 1942, when he opened a sculpture studio at 92 Princes Street, Edinburgh. Here he trained other sculptors.
 
In 1854 he moved his studio to Mound Place where he worked until he retired in 1861. He maintained a studio at Coates Place after his retirement and held his final exhibition there in 1862.
