Anne Redpath RSA was born in Galashiels. She was educated at Hawick High School and attended Edinburgh College of Art. She also studied at Moray House Training College for Teachers. She travelled to Belgium and Italy as part of a travelling scholarship for a year.

 

She married and moved to France where she spent fifteen years before returning to Scotland in 1934. She had little time to paint whilst caring for her family but resumed her practice upon her return to this country and became a Member of the Society of Scottish Artists the same year. She became the first female painter to be elected an Academician in Scotland in 1951.
