Benno Schotz was born in 1891 near the Gulf of Riga.

He studied engineering in Germany before visiting his brother in Glasgow in 1912, remaining for a year before returning home briefly and then moving to Scotland permanently. Here he trained at the Royal Technical College and later took evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art where he received the Evening School Silver Medal for excellence.

Schotz became an artist who saw himself as a Scot and was recognised as one of the foremost sculptors in the UK. In 1963 he was made the Queen’s Sculptor in Ordinary for Scotland.
