Percy Portsmouth RSA was born in Reading in 1874. He began his career serving a five-year apprenticeship as an engineer before going on to study art at University Extension College. He continued his training under Professor Edouard Lantéri and brought with him the classic tradition of his teacher to Edinburgh where he was appointed teacher of modelling at the Edinburgh School of Art on the Mound. He was the first Head of Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art following its establishment in 1908.
Examples of Portsmouth’s works can be found across the UK and include the 1914-18 War Memorial in Thurso, the memorial to the late Rt. Hon. Lord Glentannar in Aboyne Church and a “Madonna and Child” at St Mary’s Church in Rushden.
