Born in Edinburgh, Davi Laing was a notable Scottish Antiquary and Librarian, who is remembered for his knowledge of Art, both native and foreign. Laing became a member of the Society of Antiquarians, where he contributed greatly. In 1837, Laing was elected as the Librarian to the Writers to the Signet, a position Laing held for forty years until his passing.
Laing was elected Honorary Professor of Antiquities to the Academy in 1854, and was translated to the Honorary Chair of Professor of Ancient History in 1861. During this time, he delivered to the Academy numerous lectures. After Laing’s death in 1878, Laing’s collection of manuscripts from his extensive personal library was bequeathed to the University of Edinburgh Library; it is considered as one of the most important donations in the library’s history. Laing also donated his major collection of Scottish and Old Master drawings to the Royal Scottish Academy, the majority of which were transferred to the nation as part of the 1910 Order.
Laing was praised for his extensive range of knowledge of biographical and historical knowledge, but most importantly his compassion and willingness to help others.
