An Lanntair is a hub for creativity and the arts in the Outer Hebrides.
We are a multi-arts venue – at one and the same time a contemporary art gallery, a theatre, a cinema, a dance studio, a concert hall, a platform for poetry and literature, a studio – every space stretched to showcase the arts in multiple forms. Our work stretches across a national and international platform, yet our distinctiveness lies in being ‘of the place’, rooted in who we are, and the creativity of Gaelic and the Outer Hebrides takes centre stage.
We also work with partner organisations such as Sail Britain providing residency options at sea.
We work with organisations such as Grinneabhat and Bhaltos Community Trust to provide studio spaces.
Studio Space:
1 week
3 months
Curatorial support, technical support, equipment loan and support, island networking and production support.
Hot desk, photocopying, use of workshop space (in consultation with Education and Outreach staff).
The hotdesk is at An Lanntair in Stornoway and is free as is use of equipment at An Lanntair and curatorial and production support
Marketing and publicity
None, but interest in community and socially engaged practice would fit well.
None directly.
Grinneabhat is our recommended accommodation, and the rates are on their website www.grinneabhat.com – it is a community hub and cultural centre on the Westside of Lewis – 30 minutes’ drive from Stornoway.
We also work with Sail Britain for a boat based option, the vessel acting as accommodation, vehicle and research arena.
The residency is based on the Isle of Lewis and is accessible by sea with Calmac ferries and by air with Loganair.
There is a public transport service on the island. Grinneabhat accommodation and studios are outside of Stornoway, therefore, access to a car is useful.

Travel to Stornoway is possible by air from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and by ferry from Ullapool. There is a public transport service on the island. The suggested accommodation and studio is 15 miles from Stornoway with another more rural studio available 40 miles from Stornoway. Therefore, access to a car is useful.
The studio spaces are fully accessible.
An Lanntair is a wheelchair accessible venue with a lift.
The artist is recommended to have their own insurance in place.
