Nicholas Harrington is an artist and designer who works with precious metals as well as scrap materials and discarded offcuts. The wood for this chair was found in a skip in Glasgow. The style borrows openly from Eileen Gray and Gerrit Rietveld to suggest a necessary, if uncomfortable, dialogue involving the optimism and idealism of early Modernism and our current age of over-consumption and impending climate catastrophe. The chair is an asymmetrical arrangement of planes aiming to create a coherent whole that is both solid and sculptural, in an effort to express a feeling of dynamic equilibrium and simplicity.
