Bill Scott was born in Dumfriesshire and was educated at Dumfries Academy. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1953-1959. He was a secondary school

teacher before joining the staff at Edinburgh College of Art in 1961 where he stayed until 1997, inspiring many artists as a tutor there.

He is best known for his constructed sculptures in various materials, but he also made modelled figures cast in bronze and carvings. Drawing was important to him as was the use of colour in both sculpture and collage. He made commissioned work, exhibited widely and became President of the RSA in 2007.
