Both Redpath and Gillies are best known for their landscapes and still lifes. For both, portraiture remained a largely unexplored avenue save for a small number of works by both which for the most part focussed on close family members. Here Redpath captures the likeness of one of her three sons, the artist David Michie. But his portrait is secondary to composition and pattern, highlighted by the brief touches of his red shirt which bind the entire work together.
