Elected RSA: 10 July 1829
William Simson RSA was born in Dundee in 1799. He studied at the Trustees’ Academy in Edinburgh and his early works of landscape and marine subjects found quick success. He later turned his attention to figure painting. Upon finishing his studies, he took on a teaching role at the Trustees’ Academy.
He was a talented landscapist and exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1831 with Solway Moss Sunset, which ranks as one of the finest examples of the early Scottish school of landscape.
