William Gillies and the Galloway Connection

A major touring exhibition from the Royal Scottish Academy is on show in Gracefield and Kirkcudbright Galleries, bringing a unique portrait of one of Scotland’s most influential artists to Dumfries and Galloway.

Here at Gracefield, an exploration of William Gillies RSA’s wider influence as a teacher and thinker, particularly to Galloway friends and colleagues, Archie Sutter Watt and John Maxwell whose work has been drawn from the Gracefield and Stewartry art collections. Over 50 paintings explore their work and life-long association.

 

In Kirkcudbright, the solo show William Gillies: Modernism and Nation reviews his wider career as an artist from the beginning of the early 1920s to his death in 1973.

 

Exhibition runs until January 10th, Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm.  Please note Gracefield is closed for a week from 3pm on Christmas eve and re-opens on Saturday 3rd January, 10am.

 

 

William Littlejohn RSA: In a New Light

This exhibition of over 40 works selected from the artist's studio bequest to the RSA, explores the life and work of William Littlejohn RSA (1929-2006). A highly distinguished Scottish artist practicing largely in watercolour and collage-based media, his landscape and still-life pieces reflect his life in the harbour town of Arbroath and Scotland’s east coast, his travels to Japan, and the possibilities of representation and abstraction that evolved over his career.

    About Gracefield Arts Centre

    Gracefield Arts Centre presents a programme of local, national and international art and craft exhibitions through the year alongside selected shows from our own permanent collection of art. You'll also find a cafe (hours 10-3pm), craft shop and activity room spaces, including a small printmakers' workshop. We regularly run printmaking classes and offer saturday and holiday art and craft activities for children and young people.

     

    Gallery hours are Tues-Sat 10am-5pm, admission to exhibitions is free, with ample free parking and gardens grounds.
