Legacy : A celebration of unity from differences and rivalries
Since its inception 1891, the Society of Scottish Artists (SSA) has (mostly) held its annual exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy. The SSA's founder and first president was a Royal Scottish Academician. It wasn’t always such a harmonious alliance as there there were rivalries in the first decade.
As part of the 127th Annual Exhibition, the SSA will display work of the first generation of presidents who led the society during those challenging years, highlighting their links to the RSA. Despite the early differences between the two organisations, there were many connections between them and the two have always co-existed alongside each other. The exhibition will include work on loan from the RSA Collections: Summer Time by SSA founder, Robert Noble RSA, alongside Landscape with Hail Cloud by Robert Buchan Nisbet RSA RI and Falkland by James Cadenhead RSA.
In addition to the exhibition's tribute to the first presidents as part of the celebrations, SSA will host talks on the early years of the organisations. These will highlight how these past presidents influenced and led the SSA to what it is today: Scotland’s largest artist-led organisation committed to providing a well-established platform for artists working across all disciplines and art forms at every stage of their career.
