旅路 | Tabiji - Journey (with wonderment)
Paul Furneaux RSA is a Master Printmaker whose work draws inspiration from the colours, shapes and textures of both Scottish and Japanese landscapes. Renowned for his innovative use of the traditional Japanese printing method, Mokuhanga, Furneaux spent four years living in Japan, completing a master’s degree focussed on the technique.
Japan has continued to be a major influence on Furneaux’s work and in the spring of 2023, he returned there to undertake the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, a vast, circular, pilgrimage walk on the island of Shikoku. Aided by the RSA Sir William Gillies Bequest Award, Furneaux completed the journey and has distilled the experience into a new body of work. We are delighted to present these new works in the gallery, along with an accompanying publication which delves deeper into the journey and its creative influence on the artist.
