Modernism and Nation: William Gillies and his Contemporaries: Modernism and Nation Tour at The Pier Arts Centre, Orkney

This exhibition forms part of a major Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) touring project, which seeks to consolidate Gillies’ position as a major twentieth-century painter and bring wider recognition to his practice, and his life, within the story of British Modernism.

Set alongside the Pier Arts Centre’s own significant collection of twentieth and twenty-first century British Modernism, the exhibition provides a rare opportunity for further insight and reflection on Gillies and his contemporaries. To that end, this exhibition includes key works by some of Gillies’ fellow RSA Academicians.
