In 1939 Gillies moved with his mother and his sister Janet to Temple Cottage in the small Midlothian village. The two-storey cottage had been extended by knocking through into two older adjacent outbuildings. At the rear were a hotch-potch of extensions and conversions which looked out over a small garden. Gillies made numerous sketches and paintings of this meld between interior and exterior.
