This is one of a series of landscapes (in this case unfinished) where Gillies explored a particular compositional solution. Presaging his mature still life paintings, Gillies here usurps conventional perspective. The scene is flattened and brought directly to the surface of the picture plane. The road cutting between the trees to right of centre is bent almost vertical.
