From the artist: In creating this photograph, I really wanted to explore the effects of mental health issues and the impact that they have on human emotions in a minimalistic yet emotive way. I took a lot of inspiration from Edward Honaker, a famous photographer who faced a lot of his own mental health issues whilst growing up and conveyed this through his images. Whilst organising this photoshoot at home in my bathroom, I faced a few challenges, including carrying lighting equipment home from school on the bus and bickering with my sister, trying to persuade her to model for me. Eventually, once she finally agreed and after several cartons of milk in the bathtub, and many contact sheets later, I feel I managed to create this simplistic yet captivating portrait. The composition has a rather sombre mood, giving the impression that life has just got too much for this individual, partially submerged in the water, as if trying to shy away from reality.
