From the artist: For my Advanced Higher Art folio, I became fascinated by chiaroscuro and the effect of light and shadows on the human face. I experimented with dramatic light sources and used my phone camera to record how light effected the mood of a portrait. I felt that the strong contrast between light and dark added another dimension to my work creating a sense of drama. By using just tone to produce monochromatic studies the stark contrast could be further heightened. Looking at the work of Caravaggio helped me establish techniques that create the illusion of depth using shadow.
