Morar, on the west coast of Scotland, was a favourite place for Gillies to visit and paint. He rarely travelled with anything else in mind. When asked how he spent a past holiday, he replied ‘Why painting, of course, what else is there to do?’. At this time Gillies was particularly interested in the art and ideas of Paul Klee, Robert Delaunay and Wassily Kandinsky.
