Elected ARSA: 14 November 1838
Montague Stanley was an actor and painter who from an early age excelled in the arts. At age 15 he took his first acting job and was received well by critics. Over the next 14 years he worked as an actor while developing a keen eye for painting. When away from the theatre he would travel to Wales, England and the West of Scotland to sketch.
From 1828 until 1844 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy and once at the Royal Academy in London. He was also known for his book illustrations and many of his landscapes were engraved for this purpose.
