William Littlejohn was born in Arbroath and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1946-50. Like Gillies, an interest in the edges of things; of land and sea, the shore and harbour, and the boundaries of abstraction, began early in his career and endured in his art. This is an early abstract work, which has the feel of Kandsinky and Klee merging with the light of the east coast of Scotland.
