Sophie is a recent graduate of Gray’s School of Art and a 2025 John Kinross Scholar, from the Scottish Borders. Her practice evolved at Gray’s, into a magnification of the past, exploring gothic and elegant imagery. She employs tradition, alongside themes of separation, ties and complications, often pairing slices of portraiture with delicate crafts to signify complexities in both universal and personal experiences. Previously she has researched the Victorian fascinations with death, through their interest in symbolic language, mourning jewellery and hair. Sophie is implicit in her work, using symbolism and somewhat simple motifs as suggestions of legacy, feminine complexities and self-expression. Heritage and family ties regularly influence her practice as she draws inspiration from dated portraiture found in the abundant attic of her grandparents, alongside old letters, invitations and delicate materials that invite an additional narrative to her practice.
