This summer we are pleased to present a selection new work by artists supported by our Residencies for Scotland programme. Since its inception in 2009, RSA Residencies for Scotland has awarded over £313,000 to 106 artists at 29 venues across Scotland. This artist-led scheme enables a valuable period of research, development and production for visual artists at all stages of their careers, whilst forging important links with centres of excellence across Scotland.

The exhibiting artists all share a strong connection with the landscape and reference its ever-changing elements.

Victoria Crowe RSA spent time at the Pier Arts Centre in Orkney, staying in the newly refurbished artist’s residence, Linkshouse. During her time there she explored the island’s elemental landscape, stripping the elements back to land, sky, sea and vast open horizons, to observe more completely the ideas of changing light and atmosphere.

Calum Wallis, who was resident at The Bothy Project’s Sweeneys Bothy on the Isle of Eigg, made drawings with and of the land, with the wild weather and geology of Eigg playing a key part in the making process.

Jamie Wardrop let the ecology of the Isle of Coll influence and inform creation of new work during his time at An Cridhe, experimenting and trailing new ideas and techniques for immersive installations.

Siobhan McLaughlin spent a month at Cromarty Arts Trust on the Black Isle. She explored Hugh Miller’s coastal walks, gathering forms through drawing and photography and experimenting with how painting can interact with the landscape.

RSA Residencies for Scotland is a biennial award and the next round of applications will be launching in late 2023. We would like to extend a special thanks to the host venues and the Barns-Graham Charitable Trust and W. Gordon Smith & Jay Gordonsmith Trust for their continued cooperation and support.
