The RSA Annual Exhibition is a focal point of the RSA programme and showcases work from RSA Academicians the length and breadth of Scotland. Now in it's 187th year, it continues to provide a platform for contemporary paintings, sculpture, film, printmaking, photography and installation alongside work by some of the country's leading architects.

This year's convenors are Eddie Summerton RSA, Neil Gillespie RSA (Elect) and Eelco Hooftman RSA (Elect), who have also curated a themed aspect within this major exhibition entitled 'Between the late and early'. Celebrating artists whose work inhabits the gap between perceived and imagined realities, it features invited artists from across Scotland and beyond who have an interest in the ethereal or otherworldly, in particular sorcery, folklore, shamanism, ritualism, dreams, predictive visions etc.

Invited artists include BAFTA award-winner John Maclean and Gabriela Fridriksdottir, who has collaborated extensively with the musician Bjork. A beautiful selection of paintings, prints and objects from the RSA Collections by artists such as William Blake, Gustav Dore and John Martin will also be on show, as will mysterious Neolithic stone balls and Witches branks from other Scottish museum collections. In addition to the visual art and objects we will be compiling an audio CD of sound-works to accompany the exhibition. These recordings will range from traditional Scottish Traveller storytelling (Sheila Stewart) through to newly developed vocal and digital soundworks such as Hanna Tuulikki's 'for the birds' a multi-voice interpretation of indigenous birdsong and calls from the Western Isles!

There will be memorial works for Bill Scott PPRSA, George Wyllie RSA and Antoni Tapies HRSA and from the RSA Awards programme, expect new works from: ROGER&REID (RSA Morton Award); Madeline Mackay (RSA Barns Graham Travel Award) and Anne Murray (RSA William Littlejohn Award).

The exhibition will be accompanied by a full colour publication. Many works will be available for purchase and as usual, the RSA is part of the Own Art scheme, offering interest-free credit for people to buy contemporary art and craft! For further details visit www.ownart.org.uk.

The RSA gratefully acknowledges support from The Friends of the Royal Scottish AcademySMart Consultants(Aberdeen) and Drambuie.
