John Massey Rhind RSA was born in Edinburgh in 1858. His early training took place in his father's studio followed by about six years at the Royal Scottish Academy Life School.

 

At aged 38 he went to the United States where he became the successful candidate in an open competition for the large bronze door of Old Trinity Church, New York. Following this Rhind produced a series of public commissions including the bronze equestrian memorial to George Washington in Newark, New Jersey. His work can also be found represented in Canada by four war memorials and a large bronze of Cornwallis.
