William Birnie Rhind RSA was born in 1853. He studied at the Edinburgh School of Design before going on to work in the RSA Life School for five years. He first exhibited at the Academy in 1878.
Among his numerous sculptural works is the Central doorway of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery with its historical figures in canopied niches, and the Mary Queen of Scots' group which was gifted to the gallery by the Ladies of Edinburgh. He executed several memorials, including to the Great War at Plymouth, Buckie and Fettes College and monuments to the Scots Greys, the Black Watch and the KOSB group.
