Elected RSA: 7 October 1829 

John Ewbank was born at Gateshead in 1799 and was apprenticed to a house painter in Newcastle, and while quite young he was brought to Edinburgh by Colston, a house painter and dectorator of considerbale ability.

 

In this employment he gradually developed his native feeling for art, which as broad and delicate, a little - a very little - of the house painter reminaing in him to the end. His sea and shore views were admirable in their simplicity, while their aerial effect has never been surpassed. He died in 1849.
