Take a private tour of the home of esteemed Academician Richard Murphy. Designed by Richard himself, the house has a number of playful, clever details and surprises. It has been described as ‘part jigsaw puzzle, with its hidden and unexpected spaces, and part Wallace and Gromit with its moving pieces and disappearing walls’.
Accompanied by RSA Director Colin Greenslade, Richard will guide you through his award-winning home, which reflects the architectural influences that he’s absorbed over a lifetime of practice. Among its many accolades, the house was named the RIBA Channel 4 “UK House of the Year” in 2016.
Following the tour, you’ll be treated to a reception of finger foods and drinks.
For more information on this exquisite house, you can read The Road to Hart Street, which Richard wrote to accompany his exhibit in the RSA exhibition Home in April 2016.
Please Note: This is special opportunity only available to one group. Once booked we will be in touch to arrange a date for your tour which will take place in 2026.
Richard Murphy RSA founded Richard Murphy Architects in 1991 and has since won 27 RIBA or RIAI awards, more than any other practice in Scotland. Awards range across many building types, including education, the arts, healthcare and housing, and demonstrate both the high design standards of the practice and its versatility.
Richard Murphy Architects defines its goals as to make architecture equally of its place and of its time. Their projects illustrate that approach, looking equally at careful contextual responses to designing within and adjacent to existing buildings and also constructing new buildings within the contexts of established landscape and urban patterns.
Murphy is design leader in the practice for all projects and his work has ranged from domestic through to public and private housing; theatres and arts centres, buildings for education and health and two British Embassies. In 2006 Murphy was voted ‘Scottish Architect of the Year’ by the readers of Prospect Magazine. In the Queen’s New Year’s Honours 2007, he was awarded an OBE.
