It was not until the early 1950s that electricity came to the village of Temple, where Gillies had moved in 1939. Working mostly in the evenings, he would arrange objects on a table and light it with an oil lamp, creating a pattern of strong shadows. There are clever illusions in this still life, which make us question what is real and what is not.
