Docherty is a painter and creator of artworks using found objects, born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, in 1944. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art (1964–9) and an Andrew Grant Scholarship allowed him to travel to France and Spain. Docherty gathers found objects, which he paints and which together chronicle his travels. His first solo show was in 1970 at Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh.

Over 50 years of practice, Docherty has exhibited nationally and internationally, accumlating numerous awards along the way; including the W Gillies Award to Northern Africa and another to Cuba. Please consult RSA Archives, Edinburgh College of Art/University of Edinburgh Archives and Richard Demarco Archives regarding Awards and Research.
